I have some strong personal connections to this song, and remember what it's original purpose was, which was being a song dedicated to Joe Ranft who sadly died in a car accident in 2005 before Cars released. I think this song means that even if you go off the beaten path you think that you are going to go in life, it might actually be a good thing because then you will be able to have new experiences and meet new people who actually care and abandon your past and only care about the present, as that is all that matters in the present moment.
