Many think the song is about his thoughts, feelings and perceptions while smoking a joint (the midnight lamp). Jimi is actually referring to the burning the midnight oil (going over playlists and song notes) as he reflects upon his loneliness and isolations he feels while traveling when on tour. and staying up past midnight.
