Which Way Is Up?
Lyrics
At the direction of the squire
We climbed ever higher
When we got 'em to the bottom we got down
And we descended to the top
Kept going when we stopped
Marched in backwards, and told them we'd left town
And there we were, in our absence, or so I'm told
At the direction of the mistress
We climbed the stairs of the fortress
All the way down to the tower
We passed ourselves on the way down
The rank and file started clapping
Wondering "what's next to happen?
And what do we do now, captain?
Because we don't know which way is up!"
I looked down on a daisied lawn
To where a host of tiny eyes
Of snow and gold from velvet shown
And made me think of starry skies
I dreamt I plucked from heaven's field
A star, and held it in my hand
Said I: "The might of god I wield!
The great and small I understand!"
I took a daisy in my hold
Its snowy rays were tipped with rose
And with its tiny boss of gold
I thought "how like a star it glows!"
For, when all is said and done
In time and space I seem to see
A daisy equal to a sun
Between heart beats: eternity!
From the mezzanine in purgatory
To the basement of all captain's glory
We all want to know the story
Captain says "get in line and gather around
Quiet down and listen closely
The warmth from inside you is toasty
The light is inside you, mostly
And you get to choose which way is up"
