I believe this is about somone who wants someone who always leaves them for no apparent reason. That someone always tries to make the one they love theirs, but never succeeds and gets hurt. "Even though it's gonna fall apart, break my heart; I'll keep building till I die" I think means that the person will never stop loving them because they are all they want.
