I think it depicts a conversation with oneself. The "boy" here is the lonely self i.e., the part of us which feels lonely. The lyrics mean that the stronger we get, the more complete we feel by ourselves and we feel less lonelier; there is lesser conflict within oneself and so, one part of our self "gets along" with the other i.e., we are more coherent and self-sufficient.
