What is the Meaning of Smile
?
I think this song is about chasing happiness and making things worse in the process. He's reflecting on looking for happiness in the wrong place and lonely unfulfilling path it lead him down. Or at least that's my opinion.
Rarely do we ever know exactly what's happening in people's lives when they're writing. But spiritually, this song speaks to me about how we get caught up in the social madness of society but we can SMILE when we realize that our future is already planned for us if we're believers in God & what the bible says. "OUR FUTURE IS FOREVER. SO SMILE." Future on earth in unknown and is like a roller coaster.

I feel like this song is saying be how you are do what you want to do and live life like there is no tommorow........ Be your self
I think it's about living and not caring about the people who drag you. Like the quote "the best thing in life is to love and be loved" and in the music video it showed a couple and how they were so much in love and they nearly lost there lives in a car accident. So make the most of your day and love every moment as if you would not be here tomorrow.
For me the song is about living the now, enjoy the now, smile, because even things being bad they can worsen, but the future is forgiven... And one day we all die, so we have to enjoy the most we can.
Can't quite decide if this is an optimistic song or not; Evoking us to smile, but for what reason? Because we get to witness all the beauty that surrounds us, or because this is the step before it'll all get worse? A catchy chorus with a mellow guitar riff, might be just enough to get people smiling though, which from that point of view, aim is achieved.
