Ozzy left Black Sabbath at the height of their popularity in 1978. This was a major surprise as the Sabbath had virtually invented heavy metal before it was a thing. Normally solo artists often flounder when leaving their highly successful band but Ozzy released Blizzard of Ozz in 1980 and Diary of a Madman in 1981.
His success was instant and his onstage bat beheading antics continued, making him one of the most loved and long lasting of all headbangers.
