Who is Bill Monroe?
Bill Monroe (born as William Smith Monroe on September 13, 1911 in Rosine, Kentucky) was a singer, songwriter and mandolin player credited with creating the style of music called bluegrass. The name of the genre comes from Monroe’s band the Blue Grass Boys. He received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993 and a National Medal of Arts in 1995. His song “Blue Moon of Kentucky” has been covered by Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, Paul McCartney, among others. Monroe died in 1996.
