We’ve been hearing Sam Smith’s song entitled “I’m Not the Only One” for quite a while now, but it still does not fail to pull some heartstrings, especially of those who are sharing the same pain as the song entails. According to Sam Smith, he wanted to be the voice for lonely people and he has definitely done that.
The message of the song is pretty clear especially after its official music video was released, starring Dianna Agron as the unhappy wife of a cheating husband played by Chris Messina. However, the song isn’t entirely about hating on the unfaithful husband.
For months on end, I’ve had my doubt
Denying every tear
I wish this would be over now
But I know that I still need you here
These lyrics describe how one person still accepts the other despite knowing that he or she has an unfaithful partner. The music video depicts this as the wife is deeply hurt and so furious that she has thoughts of burning her husband’s clothes, but fails to follow through with her thoughts.
It is estimated that about 30 to 60% of all married individuals in the United States will engage in infidelity at some point during their marriage (See Infidelity Statistics). With this in mind, it is no wonder this song became such a success. Almost everyone can relate to the story being told by the words of the song.
Often times people may stay in a cheating relationship because of the following reasons:
- Love for their partner
- Hope that their partner will change
- Fear of the unknown
- Low self-esteem
- Financial support
Let’s face it, getting out of a relationship with someone you love is never easy. When you give someone your all and that person becomes a part of your life, it gets hard to see your life any other way.
