Vanessa Lee Carlton is an American singer-songwriter born on August 16, 1980 in Milford, Pennsylvania. She studied at the School of American Ballet but pursued a singing career instead, performing across New York City’s bars and clubs while at university. She is best known for her hit song "A Thousand Miles", which was taken from the platinum-selling debut album Be Not Nobody (2002). It reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 and launched her career.
