Who is Tori Amos?
Born in North Carolina in 1963, singer/songwriter Tori Amos has emerged as one of the most original female artists of her time. Among several other female performers who rejected the status quo of the music industry in the 80s, her style has been described as a "stark, lyrical attack of alternative rock with a distinctly '70s musical approach, creating music that fell between the orchestrated meditations of Kate Bush and the stripped-down poetics of Joni Mitchell", Amos turned her back on conservatory training. Locating in Los Angeles in the late 80s, she began to find her voice by the early 90s and within five years she had gained a worldwide fan base. Her style has shifted, and she has even enjoyed success with musical theater, receiving a nomination for an Evening Standard Theatre Award in 2013.
