Who is Bob Marley & The Wailers?
Robert Nesta Marley, better known as Bob Marley, was born February 6, 1945, in Nine Mile, Jamaica. Bob Marley was a Jamaican vocalist, songwriter, and musician. He is credited for being one of the pioneers of reggae music, having blended aspects of reggae, ska, and rocksteady into his unique singing and songwriting style. Bob Marley became a Rastafari icon and was also regarded as a worldwide symbol of Jamaican music, culture, and identity.
After forming the Teenagers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer in 1963, the groups renamed themselves the Wailers. The group's debut studio album, The Wailing Wailers, was released in 1965 and featured "One Love," a new version of "People Get Ready." The Wailers released an additional eleven albums throughout their career, with Bob Marley and the Wailers becoming their new name after signing to Island Records.
Legend is Marley's most notable work, which was released in 1984, and has sold over 25 million copies throughout the world. Marley ranks among the best-selling music acts of all time, with more than 75 million records worldwide sales.
Following Marley's death on May 11, 1981, his native Jamaica bestowed him with an Order of Merit to recognize his achievements. In addition, he was established in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Rolling Stone also placed him at No. 11 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, while NME ranked him No. 9 on its list of the 50 Greatest Artists of Summer 2017. Other achievements of Bob Marley include a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, an honored induction on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame.
